Listening is Part of the Process

Home/Store/Our Blog/Listening is Part of the Process

When I first trained as a professional female actor it was all about using my voice to sing, to develop a unique character, to project loud enough to be heard at the back of the auditorium. There were few mics back then, mostly floor mics. When I trained as a therapist it was all about listening. Later on I learned that both disciplines require listening.

My professor at Lesley University talked about the spiritual nature of the therapeutic session. He stated that when we were in a session with a client in the middle of the creative process, we could expect the arrival of the third. At first I was perplexed but I began to realize this was the truth. We had to be present fully in that moment to feel that something transcendent had occurred

When I create art I try to be open in the quiet to what will arrive. It is only then that I can hear the still small voice say: Choose this, not that. An invisible hand is helping me. People have told me that time seems to be speeding up. Our pace of life is accelerating, Everything needs to be at a breakneck speed. Try slowing things down. Whatever we need to do will be accomplished. Take some time to stop, breathe and listen.

“When we show up to make art, we need to get still enough to hear what wants to be expressed through us, and then we need to step out of the way and let it.” Mirabai Starr
